Our Sustainable Vision
Seafood waste is a global challenge. As much as 6 million tons of fish skins are discarded each year creating tremendous environmental waste that could otherwise be used to support local livelihoods, perpetuate Indigenous practices, and promote sustainable seafood.
In Hawai’i, fish skins and byproducts are considered one of the greatest concerns and a major operational expense to seafood processors. Producing over 30M lbs of seafood a year, it generates 850k lbs of fish skins not being used to their full potential. While some of it does get turned into compost, large amounts still go to landfills.
Over 90% of traditional leather is still made using toxic chromium-based tanning, creating significant health risks for workers and environmental hazards.
Our vision is to turn discarded fish skins into beautiful, durable and ethical leather at a new tannery based right here in Hawai’i.
